Smaller fish hurried behind it, their bodies pressing together until water rings began to surround the floating food. She leaned against the cool stone, sensing its rough grains under her palms while her brother York watched from a bench a few steps back. Warm sunlight touched her shoulders, yet a faint breeze drifted across the pond and bent the willow branches above.

Half the supply vanished quicker than her elbow joints could straighten. The same breeze stiffened, caught a fresh toss, and burst it apart; several pellets had been carried across the fountain zone before any mouth reached them. Those pieces interacted with the churning spray, swelled, and sank as murky crumbs—a visible vestige of wasted feed swirling below the plume. Esme paused. Only a thin ridge of pellets lined the cup now, edges damp where her wet fingertips had pressed. She decided to change her plan: instead of spreading the rest wide, she aimed each pellet toward the darker water where a larger shadow waited beneath the willow.
