English 原文
Nora worked beside Pascal in the small hand-press print shop that morning. She sorted clean paper on a flat piece of wood and squared the corners with light taps. Pascal stood at the press and inked the type already locked in a frame. The inking roller revolved under his palms and left a thin shine on the raised letters. In the frame, the words looked backward to Nora’s eyes, bright and strange. On the fresh page, they printed straight and clear across the white. They were making a simple outreach flyer for the town library’s reading day.
A warm, papery smell hung near the table, and the soft slide of sheets brushed the room’s quiet. A tabby dozed on a canvas mat by the door, its ear flicking when the lever thumped. A tiny splinter stood up from the wood board near Nora’s stack. She kept her sleeve away from that corner as she worked there. The rack above them already held earlier sheets, and drops of ink dried to a smooth, dark skin.
Then a cool breath of air crossed Nora’s wrists at the table. It came as a small harbinger of rain from the open door. Water began to patter on the roof, and the room felt slightly damp. The next page in her hands felt softer at the edge now. Pascal’s pull met deeper resistance from the lever, and he held the pressure a moment longer. Nora tapped the stack again and changed her grip to the short side. She passed one sheet at a slower pace this time. The routine held, but each lift took extra care from her hands.
One sheet printed a touch darker along its border, and its bottom edge rose in a small wave. Nora carried it by a corner to the drying rack and hung it with a gentle clip. The tabby woke, stretched, and watched the lines tremble above her head. Rain fell on the street, and a fine wet smell spread at the doorway. Nora raised another damp-fresh page and set it on the string, its edge still slightly wavy.
