Late afternoon light settled on the narrow canal, its generosity spreading across water that reflected rooftops in colorful ripples. Sam had chosen a flat stone near the bank, unfolded a large sketchbook, and arranged pencils, brushes, and a small bottle of violet ink. A tall heron stood a few steps away, still as a fence post, its reflection trembling only when a leaf drifted past. Sam had no inkling that the quiet scene would shift so quickly.

The first long stroke caught a sudden breeze; the page flipped and the wet line smeared tremendously across the paper. Sam pressed a smooth pebble on one corner, then tested a second line. The heron lifted one foot, sending concentric rings toward the bank; when the ripples reached the stone, a thin wave splashed Sam’s shoes and dotted the page. If the brush had touched dry paper, the outline would have stayed neat, yet water spread the ink into soft clouds. Sam wiped the margin, turned the pad slightly, and began building layers again, hoping texture might hide the stains.

Minutes later the bird stretched its wings, beat once, and landed beside the supplies. The wingtip brushed against the ink bottle; the glass rocked, tipped, and emptied over the half-finished drawing. Pigment raced between fibers, mixing with earlier smudges, forming shapes that echoed feathers. The sketch had been almost finished before the bottle tipped, yet now swirling violets and blues flowed into something unexpected, like river eddies around stones. Sam set the brush down, watched the colors merge, and tore the sheet free so the pattern could dry apart from the rest of the book. Ink pooled beside the quiet bird.
