Ben carried a small bark raft through the forest clearing.

Cool mist hung above the mossy trunks.

He wanted to move pine seeds across a narrow ditch.

The ditch stayed dry when sunlight filled the space.

Lush leaves shone, and bird calls formed a soft harmony.

Then clouds arrived, and quick rain filled the ditch again.

Water rushed, touching his boots with biting feelings.

A new break in the clouds returned the bright state.

The ditch grew shallow, and stones appeared near the center.

Another roll of rain soon covered the stones once more.

Ben waited until the ditch looked nearly empty and calm.

He placed the raft on the highest stone.

Pine seeds rested inside a small groove on the raft.

Drops returned, and rising water lifted the tiny craft.

The current carried the raft over the far bank.

Seeds slipped out and landed under a tall fern.

Ben watched the fresh spot, and new growth might improve that ground.

The rain eased, but water still dripped from the fern.

He stepped back onto dry ground and checked the quiet ditch.

A loose leaf floated beside the stone where he stood.
