A ginger cat circled the table, its whiskers twitching near the ribbed celery. Nina had planned to mark every minute, yet the rise of colour inside each stalk began at different speeds. An uneven assembly of air bubbles clogged the blue stalk, and the pencils rolled each time the cat brushed them. She hurried from glass to glass, squinting through the magnifying lens, but her timing tangled, numbers crossing in the notebook. If one stalk absorbed faster than the others, she would need a clearer sequence.

A chilly draft slid across the tabletop, slowing the red glass while warming light pooled on the yellow one. The shift surprised her; strategy changed as quickly as the shadows. Light from the window slipped lower, turning the wax into a faint honey oval on the fabric.
