English 원문
Only the lower half of the plastic reel stayed wrapped, the freed loops stretching skyward in a slim, vibrating path. Along that bright path, crimson knots repeated every handspan, a quiet pattern that could draw attention each time the line trembled. Several loops had been wound tightly before launch, so the reel now felt lighter in his grip. A sideways gust tried to jerk the reel and pulled his shoulders forward before the line steadied again. His thumb rode the spinning rim and slowed the rush, enough to keep the frame steady. He watched the knots sway in their own tiny hierarchy: larger stopper knots nearest the reel, smaller guiding knots marching farther up. The hum rose and fell around his ears, a chorus whose strange solidarity came only from wind, nylon, and tension.
A sharper flutter sounded behind him, filling the brief lull with rapid, papery beats near his ear. His friend Tess, seated by sketchbook and pencils, gasped as a gust scattered the slim sticks across the grass. Without thinking, Lyle wedged the reel against the flat bench stone to keep it from rolling. He hurried three quick strides across the grass to trap the rolling pencils before they slipped farther downslope. The rescue took perhaps ten heartbeats, yet during that short absence the wind shifted direction and strength. When he returned, the humming line looked unchanged, but the nearest crimson knot had thinned, its fibres stretched pale. Knots farther up bulged in the same way, shifting the pattern from neat decoration to a row of quiet repairs. The kite still flew, though the weakened segment blurred stripes above, as if the fabric had lost resolution against the blue.
Lyle pinched the strained section and slowly reeled in a full arm’s length of line. The damaged knot lay safely beside his boot, and he hooked the line into a fresh groove. Participation from Tess went no further than an encouraging grin that flashed across her face. She began shading a cloud while he made a quick micro-decision to keep the kite aloft with shorter string. The breeze agreed for now, holding the frame high even with reduced reach, and the remaining knots kept their measured distance. If the breeze dropped again, the shortened line would still keep the frame above the trees. Lyle eased the plastic reel onto the bench stone, leaving the humming line loose between his fingers.
