The hook beside the food bins showed only a pale dust outline where the aluminium scoop usually hung. Rosa leaned forward, fingers brushing the warm wood grain of the bin’s rim, and peered inside. The scoop lay half-buried, wedged sideways under a slide of caramel-coloured pellets; each attempt to pull it free sent more pellets rolling across the brass scale. A plush yak, sun-bleached along its felt horns, slumped among collar displays behind her, and the coloured price tags along the shelf edges glowed amber under the strip lights. She had tried twice already to work the handle loose, but the narrow container left no room for her hand to twist.
A sharp flutter of wings broke the low hum of the aquarium pumps. A tiny wren had slipped through a cage door left ajar and zipped toward the ceiling fans. Rosa gave a small leap back as it darted over the supply section; the shopkeeper, who had been comparing fish filters, hurried after the bird. While everyone’s attention drifted upward, Rosa stepped aside to avoid blocking the aisle. By the time the bird was coaxed onto a perch and carried away, several minutes had passed.
Returning to the food bin, Rosa saw the pellets had settled further; the scoop sat even deeper, its handle hidden now under a little landslide the colour of baked oats. She picked up a thin perch bar—unused, still smelling of fresh pine—and slid it between the scoop and the wooden wall. A gentle lever action shifted the metal just enough; gravity finished the job as the scoop tipped free and clinked against the rim. Pellets spilled onto the scale, forming a rough spectrum from large golden cylinders to fine ochre dust, but the jam was gone. Rosa gathered what she could into a paper cup, then wiped stray crumbs from the counter. Beyond her elbow the steady bubble of water in the nearest tank continued without pause.
