Fresh mud, left by a cloudburst before noon, clung to Dinah’s boots as she and Marco squeezed along the narrow path where ferns brushed their sleeves. Dinah had already unfolded the compass; its brass lid carried a tiny raised bison that pressed against her thumb. She lifted the dial toward eye level, aiming for a quick bearing toward the finish post. Marco walked beside her, notebook wedged under one arm, tapping the cover against his leg. The path forked abruptly, yet no marker stood in sight. Both stopped; Marco stretched for the compass, but Dinah kept her grip. Above them, branches dripped with leftover rain, and damp air cooled every breath. The shared instrument hung between their palms, slightly warm from body heat.

Ahead, a tilted post finally emerged from the head-high green. Its metal plate felt slick; a lichen patch spread across the arrow, and the paint beneath had been almost erased by weather, leaving only dull flecks visible. Dinah crouched, balancing on gritty soil, and tried rubbing the surface with her sleeve. The growth held firm. Marco pulled a thin stick from the verge, the point already roughened where squirrels had been digging for hidden nuts. He offered the makeshift scraper, but kept his other hand poised for the compass. Dinah paused, then let the instrument slide into his fingers; the small bubble inside its window shifted as he angled it away from the slope. Meanwhile, she pressed the stick against the plate, flaking the lichen in brittle curls.

Cold drops spattered the ferns without warning—a sudden shower racing across the canopy. Water streaked Dinah’s knuckles, making the stick slippery, yet the green crust thinned until the arrow shape sharpened. Marco, shoulders already speckled with moisture, locked his sight down the newly revealed direction. He adjusted the dial, lips held apart, while the needle quivered over the damp brass. The arrow pointed east, and the dial lined up cleanly. Wind pushed rain through the corridor, and the wooden post shimmered under the thin sheet of water as Dinah was leaning closer, her stick still pressed against the last soft fragment of lichen.

樹冠上突然降下細雨，冷滴噼啪打在蕨葉。水痕劃過黛娜的指節，使枝條變得滑溜，但綠色硬殼愈來愈薄，箭頭輪廓終於清晰。馬可肩頭已布滿水點，他把目光鎖定剛顯露的方向，微張雙唇，調整刻度盤，針頭在濕潤的黃銅上輕顫。箭頭指向東方，刻度盤也對齊了。風送著雨水穿過走廊般的林道，木樁在薄水膜下閃光，而黛娜正湊近些，枝條依舊壓在最後那片柔軟的地衣上。
