Thin streaks of wet sand had already stained the flat stone before Hazel knelt beside the mineral diagnosis bench. The magnifying glass, held in a narrow metal framework, winked in the sun while creek water dripped from her dark pan. She lifted a pinch of mixed gravel and felt the sharp texture slide between her fingers, then let it fall back with a soft clatter. A first rough shake followed; pale pebbles bumped against the pan’s ridges and rolled away, but the water level dropped quickly, leaving half the surface dry. Some lighter grains did disappear over the rim, yet the black magnetite still lay buried beneath coarser sand.

Hazel dipped the pan again, allowing cold water to creep across her wrists. She chose a slower swirl, keeping the rim almost level so the current brushed only the upper layer. Fine tan sand began to vanish in cloudy ribbons downstream, exposing a dark crescent that hugged the inner groove. A slim green frog landed on the bench with a splash, its toes spreading on the damp wood; the sudden movement rocked the pan and shifted the heavy sand to one side. Hazel steadied her elbows against the stone and changed posture, tilting the pan toward her chest so gravity pulled the magnetite in a tighter curve. If the breeze grew stronger, it would sweep silt back into the water she needed clear, so she paused until the surface settled.

Only a thin film of water now coated the pan. Hazel breathed out, raised the far edge a finger higher, and let the last trickle glide over the rim. Gritty black grains skittered after it, slower and slower, until just three remained; with one gentle tap they slid free. One final bead slipped off the rim, and the pan lay bright and empty except for three warm yellow specks.

盤裡只剩一層薄薄的水膜。Hazel 呼氣，微微再抬遠端邊緣，任最後一絲水沿邊滑落。顆顆粗黑砂緩慢跟隨水絲離開，速度愈來愈慢，直到只剩三粒；她輕敲一下，三粒也滑走。最後一滴水珠越過邊緣時，盤底明亮乾淨，只留下三點溫暖的金黃色。
