A dull fridge bulb blinked twice, then shone across the kitchen tiles. Under that pale cone, a brown mouse ventured onto the counter, whiskers brushing crumbs near the toaster. The animal paused, ears rotating toward a distant hum from a covered pot on the stove. Rosemary scent drifted from a drying rack near the window, mixing with warm bread. Steam pressed against the lid; metal trembled and sent a thin ringing into the air. The mouse kept nibbling while the lid rattled in short bursts, bouncing an empty ladle against the pot.

The rattle from the stove grew sharper with every trapped bubble. Each note echoed off the oven door, bounced under the table, then rolled back along the floorboards. Vibrations passed the ladle’s handle, crossed plates, and reached a ceramic jar showing wildlife by a winding river. A blue-green kingfisher perched on the jar, its beak aimed at a sugar grain on the glaze. With every shake, the jar edged closer to the counter’s slick bank above the sink. The mouse’s tail flicked; paws pressed against a hanging dishcloth just as the jar tipped. Cloth swung down, drew the falling jar into its folds, and muffled the impact. Plates shifted but stayed upright after a final ring. The pot’s lid lifted once, releasing a softer hiss, yet the hum continued. The mouse stuffed a last crumb into its cheeks and slipped through a gap beside the pantry board.

冷蔵庫の電球が二度ちらつき、次の瞬間キッチンのタイルを照らした。淡い光の中で、茶色のハツカネズミがトースターのそばに散ったパンくずをひげでかすめながらカウンターへと踏み出した。動きを止めたネズミの耳は、コンロ上のふた付き鍋から聞こえる遠いハム音へと回った。窓際の干し網から立つローズマリーの香りが温かいパンの匂いと混ざり合う。蒸気がふたを押し、金属が震えて細い鈴音を空中へ放った。ネズミがかじり続ける一方で、ふたは短い間隔でガタつき、空のレードルを鍋に打ち付けた。

鍋からのガタつきは気泡が閉じ込められるたびに強くなった。音はオーブンのガラス扉に反射し、テーブルの下で跳ね返り、床板を微かに震わせて戻ってきた。振動はレードルの柄を抜け、積み重ねた皿を横切り、やがて川沿いの野生動物が描かれた陶器のびんに届いた。青緑のカワセミがびんに止まり、くちばしは釉薬に張り付いた砂糖の粒を指した。揺れのたび、びんはシンクの上の滑る縁へじわりと近づく。ネズミの尾が動き、びんが傾く瞬間、前脚が吊るされたふきんを押した。ふきんが落ち、びんを包んで衝撃を吸収する。皿は揺れたが最後には立ったままだった。ふたが一度持ち上がり柔らかなシュー音を放つが、ハム音は続く。ネズミは最後のパンくずを頬に詰め、食品庫わきの隙間へすり抜けた。
