Six narrow floorboards met at a tight angle beneath the roof peak. A low wooden chest stood an arm-length from the attic ladder. Wade shuffled the chest closer, its brass feet scraping once across the dry wood. Inside, under a cloth patterned with tiny squares, lay toy rails cut from thin tin. A faded picture of an open field was fixed to the underside of the lid; pale green paint still clung to the grass. A thin ray of light crossed the floor, bringing the dry scent of timber with it. He propped one rail on a stack of yellowed magazines, forming a gentle slope. A round spool, no bigger than a coin, sat at the higher end. He nudged it. The spool rolled down, gathered speed, and struck a wooden ladybug. The ladybug slid sideways, hit a painted wren figurine, and the bird toppled onto a small clay bun shaped like a treat.

Wade adjusted the scene without clearing the scattered pieces. He placed the baker figure, short and stout, next to the fallen bun, and lifted the rail a finger’s width higher. This time he set two spools together. When he let them go, the leading spool bounced off a dent, veered left, and slammed the baker. The baker tipped into the first spool, knocking it forward again so both raced along the floor. They caught the wren’s tail, pushing the bird and the bun into the dust left from the first run. The combined pile slid farther and tapped the ladder’s lowest rung, leaving a faint ring where metal met wood. Warm air drifted from the skylight and lifted loose dust into spinning spirals. In the moving haze, the tiny figures lay scattered while motes kept circling the slanted beams.

屋根裏の棟下で床板が六枚、鋭い角度で突き合わさっていた。はしごから腕一本ほど離れた所に低い木箱が置かれていた。ウェイドは箱を引き寄せ、真鍮の脚が乾いた板を一度だけ擦った。箱の中、細かな四角模様の布の下から薄いブリキの玩具レールが現れた。ふたの裏には色あせた草原の絵があり、淡い緑がかすかに残っていた。細い光が床を横切り、乾いた木の匂いを運んだ。ウェイドは古い雑誌を積み重ね、その上にレールを傾けて置いた。硬貨ほどの丸いスプールを高い端に置き、そっと押した。スプールは転がりながら加速し、木製のてんとう虫にぶつかった。てんとう虫は横滑りして彩色された小鳥に当たり、鳥は小さな粘土の菓子の上に倒れた。

ウェイドは散らばったままの小物を残しつつ、場面を手直しした。ずんぐりしたパン職人の人形を倒れた菓子の脇に立て、レールを指一本分だけ高く持ち上げた。今度は二つのスプールを並べた。放すと先頭のスプールがくぼみに当たり、左へ跳ねてパン職人に衝突した。人形は最初のスプールへ倒れ込み、押された二つは再び勢いを得て床を走った。彼らは小鳥の尾に触れ、鳥と菓子を最初の走行でできた埃の上へ押し出した。まとまった塊はさらに滑り、はしごの一番下の段を軽く叩き、金属が木に触れた場所に薄い輪を残した。天窓から暖かい空気が入り、ゆるい埃を渦にして持ち上げた。動く霞の中で小さな人形たちが散らばり、舞い上がる塵が傾いだ梁の周りを回り続けた。
