Beads formed, gathered, and dropped onto a light receipt curled near the glass. Each droplet added weight, until the damp strip tipped over the edge and slid toward the carpet.

The receipt brushed the service dog resting under the table. The golden retriever lifted its head, shifting just enough to push the rolling step-stool behind it. Metal legs vibrated, and the moose cushion toppled sideways. Wren’s right foot shot out, toe catching the stool before it picked up speed. He straightened, adjusted posture, and shortened his search to two keywords. This time the terminal returned a single call number, yet the printer hesitated again, the paper warming against the stiff guides until it bowed slightly instead of jamming outright. Grant had copied the number by hand when the overhead lights dimmed in the first closure wave, and both students gathered their notes. Behind them, the pages on the return cart still swayed in the uneven airflow.

Near the chair, the retriever nudged the damp receipt, sending it skimming beneath the cart’s bottom shelf.
