The father sits on the log.
A small notebook rests close.
A magic marker pen lies beside it.
The child Basil kneels on sand.
Basil's knees press sand; grit glints; damp ring remains.
Water murmurs under small stones.
Leaves shift.
Sand warms.
Basil turns the pen sideways.
Its tip points toward the creek.
He keeps it close to the notebook.
He lifts a wet stone up.
Drops fall.
Cool drops dot his dirty thumb.
He sets the stone on sand.
A dark halo spreads around it.
He picks a round stone next.
He places it on a small stack.
A leaf drops onto the top.
The stone wobbles in place.
"Nice spot for stacks," he says.
Basil lifts the leaf away.
He returns the round stone.
He lowers the wet stone back.
A pale rim circles the sand.
He turns the pen back again.
Its clip faces the notebook now.
He nudges the pen straight.
He straightens the pen again.
