Late afternoon light striped the glass roof of the city’s science hall. Leila arranged her stall, stacking clipboards and aligning a row of pencils. A thick booklet detailing each experiment lay beside a stack of questionnaire forms waiting for visitors. Beside the forms, a brass-rimmed magnifying glass caught the sun and threw a bright oval onto the tiles. She ran a quick calculation on her tablet, estimating the number of clips needed to secure every sheet. An earlier run showed a tiny approximation error, so she rounded up and fetched a small jar filled with spare clips from her bag.
A ceiling fan switched to a higher setting, and its first gust rippled through the hall. Papers lifted, fluttered, and slipped from her table. Leila lunged, caught two stacks against her chest, yet one clipboard spun away, skidding under a folding chair. The sudden movement nudged the magnifying glass; the lens rolled off the table, tapped the floor, and slid beneath a display about planetary orbits. She crouched, stretching an arm past a cardboard Saturn, fingers brushing cool metal only after a second reach.
While standing, she noticed faint smudges on the top questionnaire sheet. Curious, she placed the rescued magnifying glass over the print. The enlarged letters exposed tiny ink pools where numbers blurred together, turning “8” into something that looked like “3”. Her earlier calculation relied on those totals; the approximation error explained why her clip count kept feeling just a little off. She re-counted three columns with the lens hovering above them, tapping each distorted digit until the true figures emerged. The corrected sum produced a smaller stack requirement than she had predicted.
She adjusted her setup, sliding the excess clips back into the jar and weighting every bundle with a single metal bar. Visitors drifted closer, forming an irregular arc that expanded and contracted with passing footsteps. Children leaned over the table, pencils drumming in spontaneous rhythm while adults compared star models behind them. Leila guided loose air toward the aisle by angling one display board, and the lifted corners of paper eased back onto the surface without fuss. Across the polished floor, the last sheet rested under the quiet lens.
