English 原文
Morning dew still dotted the window when Mira lined up jars of flour, yeast, and honey on the counter. Her plan today was clear: recreate her grandmother’s braided loaf, a small golden cloud she had tasted only once. She had memorized the list of steps years earlier, treating them like a gentle ritual that filled the house with warmth. The first mix looked promising, yet a stubborn clump of flour resisted the spoon. Mira kept a steadfast rhythm, pressing harder until the lump finally broke apart. To keep the bowl stable, Kian, her younger brother, slid a damp towel beneath it, while the smell of yeast began to spread across the room.
Trouble returned during kneading. The dough clung to Mira’s palms, refusing to lift, so she sprinkled extra flour; the mass loosened but turned dry around the edges. She poured a thin thread of water, yet the centre sagged again. By the time the timer, which had been set by Kian earlier, rang softly, a ridge had formed like a fault line across the surface. If she had noticed the missing salt earlier, she would have avoided that crack. Rather than panic, Mira folded the dough again and again, letting her weight sink through her wrists, hoping to forge a smooth skin. Each fold tightened the texture, and steam from the kettle clouded the glass door nearby.
When the loaf finally entered the oven, another obstacle emerged. The temperature wheel jittered, sliding a few degrees lower each minute. Mira tried to stick to the original baking time, yet the pale dough showed little color. She added five more minutes, then another three, watching through the fogged glass. Suddenly, a small pop sounded; the ridge opened and shaped itself into a neat spiral, as if an artist had signed the crust. Fulfillment drifted through the kitchen with the first caramel scent. Kian whistled, but Mira only opened the door carefully. Steam rushed out, and the round loaf rested on the wooden rack.
