Spray from distant breakers painted faint dots on her notebook while gulls wheeled overhead. Below, water rolled between dark walls, the current steady yet calmer than the open bay. A grey back arched, scattering droplets that caught the sunlight. The animal vanished as quickly as it appeared, yet its genuine clicks rushed into the recorder with irregular, vibrant rhythm. Voices rose and tangled along the bridge, cameras lifted, boards quivered, and then stilled as the water calmed. Muted clicks drifted through the water beneath the footbridge.
