A low bell drifted from the main staircase, hinting that the campus library would pull its shutters soon. Halfway down the marble steps, a classmate darted across his path, waving a folded timetable. Their shoulders clipped; the metal box slipped, skated along the railing, and halted near a ventilation grate. Milo crouched, checking the lid. A narrow crescent-shaped aperture had opened where the fastening pin loosened, and a thin glimmer of glass peeked through. A single gust from the open door shivered the plate inside. He pressed the clasp, but the pin refused to settle. Voices echoed from the lobby as students queued at the security desk; the small crowd threatened to jostle him again. Milo shifted sideways, leaning against the wall to shield the box while working the stubborn hinge.

A dry click finally locked the lid. Milo slipped into the library just as the revolving door slowed for the hourly cleaning routine. Behind the counter, the librarian stacked returned volumes onto a motorized belt that carried them toward sorting shelves deeper inside. Milo placed the box on the stainless surface; the belt jerked, swallowed it, and rumbled away before he could explain that the container held a scientific slide rather than a book. His hand rose, too late. The librarian blinked, reached for a control switch, and the entire mechanism stalled with a groan. From the shadowed channel, the box emerged again, riding backward like uncertain cargo. The surprise left three waiting students staring at the frozen machinery.

The librarian lifted the rescued box and set it beneath a reading lamp. Milo’s mentor from the photography club arrived behind the queue, drawn by the commotion; the mentor’s eyebrows arched at the sight of the laboratory label on the lid. Together they raised the clasp. The glass plate lay intact, although a faint fingerprint now glowed in violet where the aperture had been open. The mentor laughed, already picturing the unexpected pattern in the final enlargement. A hush spread as the belt started once more and books glided forward. The metal box rested between the silent lamp and a stack of reference atlases.
