Trinket Under the Attic Hatch-

English 原文
Mateo had promised himself he would retrieve the silver bird trinket before sunset. The hushed corridor outside his room held late sunlight that stopped beneath the ceiling hatch. The attic had been locked for months, and layers of paint sealed the small metal latch. He lifted a chair onto the rug, balanced on its arm, and tapped the latch with a screwdriver. Flakes drifted past his cheeks; dust motes floated like immeasurable stars waiting in the shadow above. The chair wobbled slightly, and his free hand shot out to steady the frame.
The hatch groaned when he pushed, yet the frame barely shifted, so he leaned again with greater effort. Wood finally split; a dry rustle answered, and the narrow ladder shivered as it unfolded downward. Old blankets had been piled across wooden trunks, blocking the first step of the ladder and scattering stale scent. Mateo dragged the blankets aside, climbed, and swept his phone light across ridges of boxes and picture frames. If he had used a brighter torch, the search would have ended with one calm sweep. Instead, every carton looked identical, so his hands darted from lid to lid without reward.
While he sifted through brittle newspapers, a delicate chime floated up from the floor below. His head jerked toward the ladder, and his eyebrows lifted as another metallic note drifted through the boards. He pocketed the phone, squeezed past the crates, and descended, knees clicking against the wooden rails. In the living room, his younger sister Nora sat by the window, turning the silver bird trinket between her fingers. The object had been washed, polished, and hung on a thin ribbon that glimmered against the glass. Mateo’s jaw sagged, then curved upward while Nora nodded without speaking softly. A thin beam from the hallway lamp rested on the quiet staircase.
