Jamie carried a sketchboard to the stone bridge after lunch. The bridge, which arched over slow water, caught pale afternoon light. Jamie’s goal was clear: capture the curved lines before class on Monday. A soft wind slipped under the paper, and one corner was lifted by the breeze. The board wobbled, so his pencil scraped unevenly. He pressed a knee against it, but glare from the water flashed into his eyes. He has practised quick sketches all summer, yet today the surface flickered like broken mirrors. Their friendship with Kai, who waited nearby with colored pastels, added gentle chatter that kept the scene lively, yet the drawing still refused to settle.

By the way, a passing cloud drifted overhead and threw a wide shadow across the water. The sudden dimness removed the glare, yet the wind continued shaking the board. Kai, leaning forward, placed both elbows on the edge and his weight pinned the sheet. Jamie adjusted grip and traced the final arch. Their shoulders touched; togetherness spread across the narrow parapet like a quiet blanket. Jamie hoped to finish before the cloud moved on, lines racing across the page. An unexpected splash rang out; a turtle surfaced beside the bridge and stayed still, as if posing. Jamie added the small shape, and a sincere grin stretched across both faces when the last stroke landed. Graphite settled; the picture rested flat on the board.
