Milo Before the Lights Dimmed-

English 原文
Rain slid from copper gutters while Milo crossed the courtyard toward the old auditorium. Petrichor mixed with the faint scent of varnished wood drifting through a side door that hung ajar. One mis-placed step dropped his shoe into a shallow quagmire beside a drain; mud clung to the heel as he shook it free. He adjusted his jacket, tucked a folded program under his arm, and aimed for the glowing hallway beyond the threshold.
Inside, the foyer buzzed. Jackets brushed past, conversation layered over footsteps, and a brass chandelier scattered reflections along the marble. A cluster formed around a glass display, the gentle push and pull hinting at quiet camaraderie among strangers comparing preferred seats. Milo threaded through the eddying bodies, aiming for the left staircase. A sudden jostle loosened his grip; the program fluttered away and slid under a velvet rope. He bent after it, fingertips grazing the paper just as an usher swung the rope aside for a late trio, widening the gap and pulling him toward the stairwell.
Halfway up, he noticed a slender wooden baton lying on the third step. Its polished length and engraved copper cap stirred intrigue—why would such a tool rest here rather than backstage? He paused, weighed the baton in one palm, and resumed climbing, boots leaving faint brown crescents on each tread. At the balcony entrance a door refused his first push; a second, firmer shove made the latch click, releasing a muted hiss of warm air from the tiered hall.
Below, musicians tuned strings while the audience settled in rippling waves. Milo located his row, but before he sat, the conductor emerged, patting pockets, scanning the podium. An expectant hush spread; bows hovered, brass stayed silent. Recognizing the object in his hand, Milo leaned over the railing and extended the baton. A stagehand near the curtain spotted the gesture, hurried up the side aisle, and received the slender stick with a nod. Applause rose, less for performance than for motion finally resuming. As Milo sank into his seat, his shoe brushed clean against the polished rail, and the chandelier reflections steadied across the hushed crowd. Above the orchestra pit, the baton rested on the black cloth near the muted brass.
