Milo Before the Glass Doors-

English 原文
Milo had spent three evenings adjusting his camera settings for today's visit to the city greenhouse. The science teacher considered a clear picture of the silver-veined fern invaluable for the class display. Milo wanted his photograph to stand out. Water streaked down the curved roof like strings of quick silver, and each droplet seemed to plunge toward the gravel path. When he reached the entrance, he paused; the usual crowd was missing, and the glass doors reflected only gray sky. A hum from inside suggested machines still worked. He pressed his palm against the cool surface, searching for movement beyond the shifting reflections.
A latch clicked above his head; the caretaker had already locked the main doors for weekly cleaning. If Milo had known the caretaker's exact schedule, he would have arrived at sunrise instead. Instead, he circled the building and discovered a narrow service gate standing ajar behind a hedge of rain-soaked bamboo. The hinge resisted his push, squealing until his shoulders tensed, yet it opened just wide enough for him to squeeze through. Inside, warm vapor clung to the camera lens, and every hurried photograph blurred into green smudges. He wiped the glass with his sleeve, but new fog returned like breath on winter glass. Beyond the first corridor, a rope marked the walkway had been closed for maintenance, blocking his usual route toward the tropical wing.
Milo veered left, following metal railings toward the research alcove, expecting emptiness. Instead, brief camera flashes ticked like tiny stars among the dripping leaves. His younger sibling, Leta, crouched beside the silver-veined fern, adjusting a tripod with steady fingers. Leta had borrowed their grandfather’s antique camera earlier that morning, claiming curiosity, yet Milo had assumed she would stay at home. The surprise tightened his jaw, then loosened into a grin as she looked up. Without speaking, they compared screens; Leta’s images shone crisp while Milo’s remained foggy. She handed him a spare cloth and a silica pouch from her pocket. After a few minutes, his lens cleared, and both cameras clicked from different angles. Two small cameras rested side by side beneath the arching fern fronds.
