English 原文
Soft light reached Dock Seven while Rayla rolled a squeaking cart toward the docking-bay platform. She had arrived to oversee a project: a tide-inspired mosaic meant for the pier’s edge. Forklifts rumbled by, gulls circled, and travelers drifted between painted lines that kept footpaths open. The design on her cart held hundreds of cloud-white shards and storm-blue slivers; she planned to weave in elements scavenged from beach glass so the surface would glitter when waves rose. A small box on top protected one rare shell tile—the genuine article salvaged from an old lighthouse lantern room. Only once in a blue moon did such a shell wash ashore intact, and the tourism board expected to see it anchored at the center of the work.
Wind funneled between mooring posts and pushed Rayla sideways. As she steadied the cart, a crewman shouted to no one in particular, and a crate slid from a forklift, landing across her route. The cart jolted, one wheel lifted, and several blue slivers spilled onto the planks. Rayla knelt; her knees tapped wood; fingers gathered the fragments. Another gust tipped the open design tray, scattering more pieces. Nearby commuters slowed, forming a loose semicircle that blocked returning forklifts; the whole loading rhythm faltered. Rayla exhaled through pursed lips, shifted the crate just enough for space, then used both arms to slide the cart forward. In the scramble, the rare shell tile had slipped free and now lay upside-down among the scattered shards.
She lifted it carefully, but a ripple of boat wake rocked the platform again, nudging several fragments into a rough spiral around the shell. The accidental pattern mirrored a breaking wave so convincingly that onlookers paused, shoulders angled for a clearer view. Rayla’s eyebrows arched; she set the shell in the middle, guided by nothing more than her adjusting hands, and nudged stray shards to complete the swirl. The crowd’s shuffle created a sudden hush; even forklifts idled while operators watched. Without speaking, two deckhands placed short folding barriers to protect the area, and the improvised image remained, glowing in the rising light. Sunlight rested on the newly laid tiles beside quiet ropes.
