Kai packed a small basket before sunrise. He planned to row toward the island. A famous storyteller waited there with new tales. Small waves tapped the hull in quick rhythm. Wind pushed salt air across the canal. Grit swirled and scratched Kai's wooden oars. One oar slipped, struck the basket, and tipped it. Fruit rolled over the deck and splashed into water.

The floating fruit soon attracted three loud hungry gulls. Their wings beat hard against Kai’s loose sail. The sail flipped and covered the second oar. Kai needed that oar; it was essential equipment. He plunged his arm beneath the canvas and tugged. A small shimmering magical fish slid out with the oar.
