Morning light filled the small square.

Kai walked along the stone lane with a wicker basket. Inside, one painted egg rested on soft straw. This egg opened the spring ceremony in his mountain village. A gust pushed bright balloons from a stall behind him. The balloons bounced, then struck his basket with sudden force. The egg leaped out and rolled toward the fountain edge. A plank beside the fountain shook and tipped a bronze bell. The bell fell, hit water, and splashed Kai's shoes.

Kai jumped, steadied himself, and chased the traveling egg. The egg floated, resting in a circle of wet ribbon. The ribbon came from a mask that decorated the goat statue. He lifted the ribbon with a thin branch from the ground. Water dripped, leaving green streaks across the white shell. Kai placed the striped egg back inside the basket. He reached the square as drums started the village celebration. The elders saw the strange pattern and nodded toward the table. That new color joined the old tradition without any spoken custom. A rooster crowed, and Kai set the basket on wood.
