Felix pulled down the creaking loft ladder one bright afternoon. Ten days earlier he had boasted about a buried time capsule, and his classmates had questioned the legitimacy of that memory. If he had spoken less proudly, they would not have challenged him, yet their laughter still rang in his ears. Warm light slid across stacked trunks as he climbed, but a loose plank tilted under his shoe and scattered old nails. A weather-vane outside showed a majestic eagle turning slowly with the breeze, while dust drifted like pale mist around his shoulders.

The spot near the northern beam looked exactly as it had twelve years before, yet the capsule was missing. The plank had been shifted by shrinking wood, and a narrow gap yawned beneath. Felix knelt, but his fingers slipped on dry sawdust. He fetched a stiff broom; the handle reached the gap and scraped metal. A hollow clink confirmed success, though the container remained wedged. On his second try the lid bent, then gave way, sending a soft echo through the beams. Rust marbled its surface, hinting at lasting impact from seasons of damp air.

Felix pried the lid open, expecting marbles and crayon drawings. Instead he found his own objects plus a folded map he had never seen. A fresh silver coin lay on top, minted only last year; someone else had added to the capsule, predicting an uncertain future he could not yet picture. He wished he had stayed longer with his grandfather, the only person who still climbed these stairs. As the loft quieted, sunlight rested on the metal box beside the broom.
