Mira Beside the Hatch-

English 原文
Morning fog clung to the river road as Mira balanced a lacquer box under one arm. She had agreed to send the box north before sunset. Yet the courier wagon usually stationed outside the western gate had already left. Only a wooden hatch offering stateless service remained; parcels slid inside, and anonymous runners collected them later. Mira preferred a signed receipt, but time pressed. She marched toward the hatch, planning to drop the box and continue her journey toward the hills. A stable door banged behind her, and carts clogged the narrow street, slowing every step. The day started painting small barriers across her path.
She reached the hatch just as a brewer rolled his barrels across the alley, blocking the lid. Her shoulders tensed; she waited, then tried lifting one heavy barrel aside. Sticky foam leaked over the iron rim and glued her sleeve to the wood. That first adjustment failed, so she wiped her arm, stepped back, and looked for another route. Beyond the square, a noisy tavern shared a back window with the hatch’s chute. Companionship hung in the tavern air, carried by shared jokes and spinning coins. Entering the tavern felt like a bold move; steam, laughter, and lute strings spilled onto the street. Yet the small window inside surely should connect to the narrow chute. If she could pass the box through that gap, the parcel would leave with the next runner.
Inside, heat brushed her cheeks while strangers leaned over rough tables and clattered wooden mugs. A narrow bench had been shoved beneath the window, yet a dice game claimed the space. She crouched and balanced the lacquer box on her knees, waiting for a gap. When the gamblers leaned forward to count coins, she suddenly sprang up. She placed the parcel on the sill and nudged it through the opening. For a breath everything looked settled, but the chute angled upward steeply. The box rolled back, dropped onto a serving tray, and rattled beside fried onions. Her second careful approach had been completely and embarrassingly foiled inside the crowded room. If she had known about that incline, she would have chosen patience outside the hatch. She exhaled, spotted the brewer’s cart arriving to refill barrels, and slipped the box onto the fresh load. By the time the cart creaked past the wooden hatch, the parcel slid cleanly inside and vanished from sight. The small lacquer box rested beyond the closed hatch.
