English 原文
Closing chimes drifted through Riverton Public Library as Milo slid one more index card into his coat pocket. A neighborhood walking group expected an out-of-print trail guide for tomorrow morning, and every shelf on the ground floor showed only empty gaps where the guide once sat. The catalogue hinted at a spare copy in storage, yet no staff member lingered to confirm. Fluorescent ceiling grids dimmed toward night-mode; still, Milo’s shoes tapped past the silent information desk. A narrow stairwell beside the map exhibit offered a route toward the storage level. He pressed his palm on the cold handrail and started down, pages of dust swirling around each step.
The stairwell ended at a metal door. Its latch resisted; Milo shifted weight, pulled again, and a dull clank let the panel swing open. A faint hum from boilers settled over the basement corridor, mixing with a distant rustle. Rows of wooden crates lined the walls, their labels faded by time. While he scanned numbers, a small round creature waddled across the concrete, tiny spines catching the emergency light. A hedgehog inside a library looked improbable, yet its claws skittered truth across the floor. It nudged a stack of cardboard, sending a packet of papers sliding onto Milo’s boot before disappearing under shelving.
He crouched and lifted the fallen papers. Among carbon copies and brittle receipts lay a tightly rolled blueprint secured by a tarnished clasp. Rumors around town once linked the building’s first architect with an obsession for secret alcoves; the blueprint might prove more than folklore. Milo unfastened the clasp. Blue ink lines fanned out, revealing corridors never mapped in public plans, plus a circular chamber beneath the central reading room. A penciled margin date matched the year of a forgotten expansion in local history brochures. The discovery widened his eyes, yet the hedgehog’s trail still rustled ahead, dragging attention down a side aisle lined with filing cabinets.
A scraping sound came from the cabinets; a drawer hung open, file folders scattered where the animal had squeezed through. Milo gathered the blueprint, tucked papers inside the drawer, and climbed back toward lamplight. Upstairs, patrons prepared to leave, but the empty reading table near the globe still held space. He spread the mysterious sheet across the polished wood, smoothing curled edges as overhead lights brightened for final inspection rounds. Footsteps halted around him; curious heads tilted toward the unexpected map. Yellow lamplight rested on the unfolded blueprint.
