English 原文
Cargo winches idled while Maris balanced near the edge of Pier Six, a sampling jar rolling between her boots. She crouched, gripping a pole net borrowed from a neighboring trawler. Yellow light spilled across gentle ripples; below, a salvage barge rocked beside a crane whose hook hung motionless above the water. Farther out, deck lamps revealed tiny clouds of shrimp drifting just above the seabed, each flicker of their movement catching the glow like sparks tossed underwater. Maris aimed the net at the glass cylinder, yet the jar slipped farther from the timber and bobbed under a pontoon.
She stretched, the pole rattling against a bollard, and the net’s rim knocked a rope loose. The rope slapped the surface, startled gulls beat upward, and a shallow wave nudged the jar beyond arm’s reach. Maris steadied herself, took a slower breath, then leaned again. This time the pole twisted; wet aluminum forced her wrist sideways, and the net splashed empty. She stood, shook the spray off her sleeves, and searched the dark water, where scattered air bubbles ticked against the hulls like tiny bells.
A deeper swirl formed without warning. First came a hush rolling across the harbor, as if every engine had cut power at once. Water heaved outward, raising the salvage barge and sending a metallic creak into the night. A massive blue-gray back surfaced between pylons—a whale, far from open sea, its fluke leveling the tide. Dockworkers froze, tools half-lifted. Maris backed one step, knees bent, eyes fixed on the animal’s broad ridge. The whale released a long plume, then turned; its motion drew the sampling jar into a short eddy that spun it in a gentle circle.
The jar drifted toward the pier again. Maris lowered the pole more carefully, sliding the net beneath the glass before another swell reached the pilings. She lifted; water streamed away, and the rim finally held its small prize. Behind her, the whale glided past the harbor mouth, leaving only a line of foam that widened, thinned, and dissolved. Pale lamps over the pier rested on water quiet under the moon.
