English 原文
Gabriel balanced a manageable wooden crate against his chest while stepping off the late-afternoon ferry. The harbor spread in tiers of silver light, and gulls dipped between ropes that hummed in the breeze. His goal stood halfway along the pier: an old warehouse now divided into small ateliers where sculptors, painters, and one eccentric theoretician explored improbable machines. A loose plank flexed under his heel; he shifted his weight, steadied the crate, and kept moving.
The warehouse door resisted on the first pull. Salt had swollen the frame, so he pressed his shoulder into the beam until the latch scraped open. Inside, a pulse of warm air carried the scent of oil and cedar shavings. Gears clicked somewhere overhead. Gabriel followed the sound past shelves of marble offcuts until he reached a wide room lit by a single skylight. Metal rails circled the floor, and in the center stood a towering zoetrope: concentric drums painted with successive sketches of a breaching whale.
Dr. Lyle, the resident theoretician, knelt beside the contraption, adjusting a belt connected to a low motor. "It spins now," the man muttered without looking up. Gabriel set the crate down; the lid shifted, revealing small glass lenses meant for a later project. "Watch the timing," Lyle warned as he flicked a brass switch. The drums began to rotate. At first the images blurred, then aligned, and the painted whale seemed to arc from shadow into daylight, tail slicing imaginary spray. A faint tremor travelled through the floorboards, echoed by a deeper rumble beyond the walls.
Gabriel’s eyes jumped to the high windows. Outside, the tide lifted a real shape—an actual whale surfacing near the breakwater, dark back gleaming, blowhole exhaling mist that caught the sun. The coincidence froze the room. Even the motor settled into a softer rhythm, as though the machine acknowledged its living counterpart. Water slapped the pilings, the zoetrope slowed, and the painted animal appeared to glide beside the true one before both images slipped from view: one swallowed by seawater, the other by the halt of spinning wood.
Lyle exhaled through his teeth and reached to cut power; the drums coasted, then stopped. Dust motes drifted through the shaft of light, swirling above the crate Gabriel had delivered. Outside, the ferry engines dulled, ropes tightened against cleats, and the echo of the whale’s plunge faded. Pale reflections from the quay lights rested on the still water.
