Clara Above the Red Ridge-

English 原文
Clara balanced a narrow watercolor box on the railing of the overlook while morning shadows still draped the cliffs. She had walked since dawn, following a winding track that skirted the mountain. From the platform the stone floor dipped away abruptly; the dizzying height turned the river far below into a single silver thread. She tapped the edge of her paper, trying to mark the first broad bands of ocher. The layered walls of the canyon glowed dusty red, bright enough to recall photographs of Mars she had studied in a geology class, and she wanted that rusty brilliance to land on the page before the sun climbed higher.
Wind arrived without warning, curling upward through the natural funnel of rock. The first gust snapped the corner of the sheet; the second lifted the entire board and spun it half around. Water pooled, then streaked across the half-finished sky. Clara planted an elbow, drew a sharp inspiration through her teeth, and steadied the wobbling easel. Her brush found a crevice between planks, anchoring itself like a small flag against the current. Around her, loose sand rattled along the deck, and a circling raven tilted sideways, caught by the same invisible engine. The overlook itself trembled, metal joints clicking in protest, yet the structure held.
When the wind slackened, a metallic flash winked from a ledge lower down. At first it resembled a coin, but motion revealed machinery: a palm-sized rover, evidently dropped by a drone survey, bounced once against the sandstone and lodged behind a juniper root. The steady blink of its beacon lit the rock like a tiny lighthouse; she folded her tripod, slipped under the top bar, and scrambled along a switchback to the ledge. Pebbles skipped ahead of her shoes, and the steep sand tried to slide her toward the river, but each foothold held.
The rover’s wheels whirred uselessly until her fingers pinched the rear axle free of a twisted twig. It rolled, found level stone, and began tracing slow circles, sensors resuming their quiet scan of air and light. Clara laughed, the sound whipped thin by a fresh breeze, and raised her sketchbook in greeting to the tiny explorer. Back on the platform, she reopened the soggy page, added the rover as a bright silver speck near the cliff face, and deepened the sky to match its regained calm. Dust clung to the sketchbook spine, and the canyon lay quiet under pale light.
