Despite the fundamentals drilled into every trainee during the first semester, narrow aisles crammed with stools and backpacks often turned the simplest transfer into a miniature obstacle course, and today every surface seemed occupied by someone pipetting beneath bright lamps.

A sudden swirl of chilled air rolled from an open window, lifting the foil lid on Marcus’s dish. His elbow jerked; the tray tilted; agar slid toward one edge. He caught the dish in time, though the motion nudged a rack of test tubes. Glass chimed, wobbled, and one tube tipped over the lip of the sink, spilling a ribbon of pink medium. Laughter rippled from a neighboring station, not unkind, yet distracting enough that he nearly missed the faint click of the incubator latch resisting his grip. He tugged once, nothing moved; a firmer pull loosened old paint, and the door surrendered with a soft scrape.

Before Marcus could slide the tray inside, every overhead fixture blinked twice and surrendered to darkness. Gas burners hissed, equipment motors hummed on emergency power, and the glow of a single ultraviolet wand near the microbiology hood painted the room violet. Hundreds of dust motes floated like bright specks in a planetarium, an astounding scene usually hidden by white light. Conversations stalled as faces turned upward, silhouettes edged in purple.
