Shoppers bunched behind her; a child’s balloon brushed her shoulder. She shifted left, but a drizzle began, and customers tugged awnings lower, narrowing the path again. Mira lunged, yet her canvas bag snagged on a chair leg; its strap stretched, then released with a pop. The wayward fruit bumped her boot and came to rest against the curb.

She crouched to retrieve it. At pavement level, raindrops magnified tiny details in the stone blocks. On one block a spiraled ridge interrupted the gray surface—too precise for stray gravel. She brushed it with her thumb, exposing the coiled outline of a prehistoric shell. The find felt pivotal, not for her career, but for the afternoon session; nothing explains deep time better than a fossil discovered between tomato crates. She balanced the pomegranate in her palm, lifted the loose block, and tucked the palm-sized fossil into an inside pocket. Nearby, the baguette trolley wobbled back into motion, and the crowd flow rearranged without comment.

The vendor offered a fresh fruit to replace the bruised one; she shook her head, paid, and wrapped the original globe. Light rain cooled the square, rinsing chalk dust from awnings and sending a soft shimmer across steel tables. Mira joined the moving ring of umbrellas surrounding the fountain, stone in one pocket, lesson in the other.
