Glen Before the Lantern Display-

English 原文
Glen rolled a narrow cart stacked with folded paper lanterns toward the side entrance of the city’s historical museum. The morning air carried the muted clang of construction on a nearby street, yet inside the marble foyer only whispers of echo lingered. A volunteer in a burgundy vest, busy overseeing deliveries for the afternoon arts festival, pointed Glen toward a freight lift and then drifted away without another word. Glen’s local goal remained simple: reach the second-floor gallery and unpack the lanterns before the school groups arrived.
The freight lift rose but stopped half a floor short, its gate trembling against an unseen catch. Glen pushed, the metal held, and only after a second shove did the latch release with a bark of steel. At the mezzanine, a teacher guided thirty children across polished tiles, their sneakers scattering stray reflections from skylights overhead. One quick turn of Glen’s cart avoided the stream of excited bodies, yet a front wheel slipped into a narrow groove between slabs and jammed. The cart tipped; Glen steadied the stack with his elbow while his shoes slid against the glossy floor. Breath slowed, grip tightened, wheel lifted, path cleared.
He reached the gallery just as Daria, a financial analyst volunteering for the festival’s cost management committee, checked figures on a tablet beside crates of wiring. Years spent comparing estimates to receipts had sharpened her eye; even now she traced numbers while simultaneously nudging a power cable away from careless feet. Glen greeted her, but before another word a sudden gust blew from a ceiling vent. The draft fluttered several lanterns off the top of his pile, and they sailed like lazy birds toward an open window. Glen lunged, caught two in midair, missed a third. It brushed a security rope, knocked a switch on a lighting panel, and rows of dormant bulbs hanging above the gallery blinked awake in a staggered wave of brightness.
Children below gasped at the unintended spectacle. Daria’s tablet chimed as the sudden illumination triggered an energy-use alert, rewriting her neatly balanced projections. She laughed, shook her head, and tapped the screen to adjust the figures while Glen retrieved the runaway lantern from a corner. Together they arranged the lanterns beneath the newly lit canopy, aligning cords so they curved like quiet rivers across the parquet. Noise from below faded, the rope stopped swaying, and light from the freshly uncovered bulbs rested across the tiled floor.
