The cable snapped and dropped onto a toy wagon.

The wagon rolled downhill toward the open gate.

It bumped the gate, which swung across the path.

The sudden motion startled three pigeons on the fence.

Their wings flapped, scattering a few dry leaves.

Leaves flew into Ella’s face, yet she stayed steady.

She caught the fallen lights before they touched mud.

She wrapped the cable around a lower railing.

A soft glow spread along the fence at once.

Minutes later, drums began to march past the door.

Ella waved as the visitor stepped onto the porch.
