English 原文
Miles pushed the glass door before sunrise, breath fogging on its surface. Inside, lamps glowed above long tables, yet the air still carried last night’s chill. He set a bulging backpack on a chair, unzipped it, and placed a fluorescent highlighter beside a heavy reference book whose spine creaked when released. His goal was simple: trace one obscure formula rumoured to hide in that volume before classes crowded the hall.
The shelves loomed higher than his shoulders allowed, so he rolled a narrow ladder across the parquet. Its wheels rattled, then locked unevenly. He climbed, balance wavering; on the first stretch, the book’s weight shifted, forcing him to grip the rung again before easing the tome free. Dust drifted as he descended, and a corner of the cover brushed a nearby textbook, causing it to slide and thud onto the floor. The sound echoed, yet the room stayed empty. When he gathered the fallen text, an unexpected sheet fluttered out: an old examination paper, margins crowded with pencil calculations and tiny arcs of colour where someone had tested ink.
Miles laid the surprise sheet flat, then opened the reference book at the index. A sudden current from the heating vent turned several pages forward, revealing the exact chapter he needed. He ran a fingertip along columns of symbols, comparing them with the anonymous notes. The figures matched, line for line, until a scribble broke the pattern. His brow angled; he lifted the highlighter, pressed its tip against the page, but the cap resisted. Ink finally flowed, marking the discrepancy in bright yellow. That thin stroke produced a chain reaction: the stiff paper curled, nudging the examination sheet closer to his elbow. Its folds separated, exposing a final line where the nameless student had written a corrected solution beside the crossed-out one he had just marked.
Enlightenment settled over the small island of desk and books without fanfare. Miles copied the neat correction into his own notebook, then returned the reference book to the ladder’s step. He slid the examination paper between its original pages, lifted the textbook, and arranged all three in a tidy stack.
Footfalls from the corridor grew louder, chairs scraped, and warm air rose above the radiator. Morning light rested on the scattered pages and the quiet desk.
