The afternoon charity event on the riverside plaza wound down. Folding tables clattered while volunteers stacked chairs. Mateo balanced a slim cardboard tube under his arm; inside rattled coins and paper stars collected from the donation game. The last stall, a row of stationary bicycles wired to light bulbs, still flickered. Earlier, children had pedaled hard, trying to harness the power of their own legs to keep the bulbs glowing. Now, only one wheel turned slowly by inertia, its faint hum blending with distant traffic.

Mateo slipped the ziqqu back into his pocket and crossed the plaza toward the river rail. Streetlamps lined the path in even intervals; their steady glow mirrored on water below.
