English 原文
The afternoon charity event on the riverside plaza wound down. Folding tables clattered while volunteers stacked chairs. Mateo balanced a slim cardboard tube under his arm; inside rattled coins and paper stars collected from the donation game. The last stall, a row of stationary bicycles wired to light bulbs, still flickered. Earlier, children had pedaled hard, trying to harness the power of their own legs to keep the bulbs glowing. Now, only one wheel turned slowly by inertia, its faint hum blending with distant traffic.
Mateo joined a short queue forming near the mobile stage. Each person stepped up, poured leftover tokens into a transparent drum, and received a handshake from the coordinator. A smooth stone the size of a walnut slipped from Mateo’s shirt pocket as he shifted his grip. The pale lump— a ziqqu he had picked up during a morning walk— bounced off his shoe. It rolled under a folding panel. Mateo crouched, pressed a palm against cool plywood, and pushed. The panel resisted; hinges creaked before the board finally folded upward, releasing the stone onto open ground.
A streetlamp blinked alive overhead, scattering amber light across the plaza. The glossy surface of the ziqqu reflected a pinprick glow, a single dot that pulsed like a tiny beacon. Several heads turned toward the unexpected spark, and the queue hesitated. The coordinator paused mid-handshake, eyebrows lifting. Mateo scooped up the stone, and the pulse faded at once. He shrugged, lifted the cardboard tube, and let the coins tumble into the drum, the metallic rattle echoing against plastic walls. Behind him, conversation resumed, chairs scraped, and the bicycles were wheeled toward a waiting van.
A gust rippled unused banner cloth across the empty stage, then settled. Volunteers folded tarps, latched storage boxes, and wheeled them toward the service alley. Mateo slipped the ziqqu back into his pocket and crossed the plaza toward the river rail. Streetlamps lined the path in even intervals; their steady glow mirrored on water below. Above them, a single paper confetti dot rested on the darkening wooden floor.
