Mia balanced a cardboard roll under one arm while crossing the central lawn of the university. Earlier they held a quick brainstorm over breakfast, and now they searched for a calm spot to paint. A long table had been placed under the stone archway, which offered welcome shade. The pair unrolled bright paper; jars of paint clinked against the wood. Just as their brushes touched the surface, a brisk breeze flipped one corner and splattered green drops across Leo’s sleeve. At that moment, several drama club members appeared, ready to take part in a ritual near the old fountain. Drums thudded; incense smoke drifted sideways, clouding the archway.

Noise and smoke pulled focus away from the careful strokes, so Mia changed strategy. She pressed two smooth stones along the paper edges, then slid the table forward, away from the drum circle. The drums marked each step of the ritual, yet Leo lowered his shoulders into a slow meditation breath; the steady rhythm kept his hand from shaking. Another gust slammed the archway door, and blue paint jumped from the jar, landing in spirals among the green drops. Instead of wiping them, Leo traced around each splash. The surprise pattern echoed the swirling incense, turning an accident into a bright border. When the drums quieted, the finished poster glowed with color, and paint droplets dried under the late sunlight.
