Leah balanced a wooden bowl against her hip while stepping toward the picnic bench. She and Felix had prepared sliced vegetables during the morning. Now the bowl felt heavier than it looked. Warm sunlight touched the pond, and cool water rustled against stones nearby. At the bench they discovered watercolor paintings spread across every plank. A silent art class had arrived earlier and filled the space. Felix held two glass pitchers and tapped Leah’s elbow. His raised eyebrows and tilted head showed clear puzzlement. A narrow patch of grass remained beside the artists. Gusty wind kept lifting blank pages from a folder, blocking their path each time they tried to advance.

Felix shifted the pitchers to one arm and pointed toward an upside-down crate beside a tree. Leah nodded and steered the bowl in that direction. A page escaped the folder again, fluttered like a rainbow moth, and landed across the bowl. The sheet carried wet paint; splashes slid into the sliced food. Leah gasped and tilted the bowl, but the colors mixed with the dressing. Felix poured a line of lemonade over the edge to rinse. Instead of washing away, the liquid blended with the paint and formed zesty streaks of pink and lime. Crisps of carrot and pepper now shone in unexpected shades. A light, refreshing scent rose, sharper than before. The artists glanced over, eyes widening, then broke into applause. Leah set the glowing salad on the crate. Spoons clicked against the rim, and the wind finally drifted past the quiet scene.
