English 原文
Mira paused at the foot of the abandoned clock tower, sketchbook pressed against her ribs. Autumn air drifted through broken windows, carrying dust that sparkled under languid late-morning light. She hoped to capture the crimson-breasted finch rumored to perch near the highest brass bell. The tower had been built a century earlier, and weather had stripped its stones unevenly. Each step showed different shades of wear; some edges crumbled, others glimmered where workers replaced mortar recently. A rusted gear lay like a silent guardian, echoing a time when punctual chimes ruled the square.
Mira climbed the spiral staircase, but several iron steps wobbled, forcing her to shift weight cautiously forward. Halfway up, a rung snapped; splinters grazed her palm, and she retreated two levels to steady breathing. If she had carried extra boards, the climb would have felt simple, yet preparation revealed its own naiveté. She tried again, pressing her foot against an outer brick ledge while fingers searched narrow mortar seams. Rainwater from past seasons had eroded the stone, leaving shallow pockets that accepted her toes like stairs. At the top, a crooked door resisted; its hinge had been repaired by coarse rope knotted around an old nail.
Inside the chamber, a carved wooden eagle spread over rusted gears, its surface grey with a century’s dust. Mira raised her eyes, stiffening when the sculpture’s shadow moved as if breathing above the silent room. A flutter answered the motion; the real finch slipped from behind the wings and dropped onto her sketchbook. Charcoal crumbs scattered as the bird hopped, and sudden colour brightened its chest where sunlight pierced the roof. Had she reached the tower sooner, the encounter would have vanished, and her waiting page remained disappointingly blank. Late sunlight rested on the quiet sketchbook at the center of the dusty wooden floor.
