English 原文
Morning fog drifted along the canal while Jodie balanced her sketchbook on a stone bollard. Across the water, an abandoned grain silo displayed cracked paint that had once celebrated an autumn harvest; swirls of amber and rust now broke into jagged fractals across its round wall. She angled her pencil toward the pattern, aiming to capture the way each shard mirrored the next. A low iron gate separated the towpath from the loading yard, and its rusted hinge resisted her first push. Metal scraped, then gave way, and she stepped inside just as the fog thinned.
Sunlight arrived in a slow progression, striping the yard and throwing fresh color onto the mural. Jodie clipped a camera to her tripod, yet a nearby delivery truck interrupted the quiet by jolting over a pothole. A wooden crate slid from the tailgate, split, and scattered carrots across the concrete. From the broken boards burst a quokka, its rounded ears twitching at the sudden freedom far from its native brushland. The startled animal bolted between Jodie’s boots, snagged the tripod leg, and toppled the rig. The camera swung but stayed aloft, the strap catching on her wrist. A lone sojourner with a weather-stained rucksack paused at the gate, eyebrows raised at the unlikely scene. Without a word, the traveler steadied the tripod while Jodie knelt, gathering rolling lenses and scattered pencils. The quokka paused beside a half-crushed apple, nose bumping the bright skin, then settled to nibble as calmly as a resident of any city park.
Jodie lifted the camera again, framing both mural and visitor. The animal’s dark eye reflected the fractured painting behind it; living fur against peeling pigment, motion against abandonment. Shutters clicked while the traveler stepped back, boots crunching loose carrot tops. Workers hurried from the truck with burlap sacks, corralling vegetables but leaving the creature undisturbed. It finished the apple, hopped toward an open drainage gap, and slipped from view. Ripples widened across a puddle where its paws had landed, repeating the mural’s geometry in shivering miniature fractals. A gull cried overhead; cart wheels rolled; the yard arranged itself for an ordinary day. Light rested on the faded bricks and the silent tripod.
