Whistles After Dust-

English 原文
Sunlight angled through the attic skylight, laying broad stripes across stacked trunks and a narrow copper conduit that hugged the ceiling. Dust hung in the bands of light, and stale pine resin drifted from a cracked beam. Leo climbed the wooden ladder; his knees quivered when a rung shifted underfoot. He reached a shelf where a battered cedar box waited. Years of friendship with Mira had etched their initials on its lid, yet the letters now wore the same gray that covered everything else. The wood kept an intrinsic quality of lightness, as though the box might float if the shelf tilted.
Leo tugged the box, but a wire snagged its handle. The wire emerged from the conduit, curled like an iron vine, and refused to release. He fetched a versatile screwdriver from a paint-spattered crate and pried at the staple pinning the wire. The staple had been hammered too deep; the metal only bent. If Leo had brought oil, the hinge would have turned silently, yet squeaks echoed instead and warned a nesting pigeon above. Startled wings knocked loose plaster, and a puff of white dust slid into Leo’s eyes. He coughed, blinked, and shifted his grip to pull again.
The wire finally snapped, and the box dropped against his chest. Hinges had been painted shut long ago, so he worked a palette knife along the seam until the lid popped. Inside lay two tin whistles wrapped in faded ribbon. When he blew one, the note cracked but held; a bright trill of delight skipped through the rafters and mixed with the pigeon’s coo. Mira’s footsteps tapped on the ladder, drawn by the sound. She lifted the second whistle, spinning it between stained fingers, and a faint metallic gleam returned. The twin whistles rested beside the open skylight.
