English 原文
A soft zephyr slipped through the small country station, stirring ticket stubs along the tiles. Milo leaned over his suitcase tower, fingers drumming, while a wisp of dust spiraled up from the beam of late afternoon sun. Clara stepped off the local train, her rolling case clicking, her greeting marked by the mellow accent she had picked up during a summer abroad. Milo pointed toward the baggage office. The violin he had inherited from his grandfather was supposed to wait inside a wooden trunk, yet the clerk had already locked the counter for the day. Together they crossed the empty platform, determined to drag the trunk out before the night train arrived.
The side door to the baggage room stuck halfway. Its rusty hinge had been oiled once, but the layer was thin, and the panel groaned at each shove. If Milo had worn gloves, his palms would have avoided the scrape of splinters. The latch finally gave, revealing piles of unclaimed luggage stacked like uneven bricks. Their goal lay under a wobbling tower of canvas bags, so the pair built a shaky corridor by sliding cases aside. One clumsy tug toppled a duffel; wheels clattered, and the narrow passage vanished again. A second attempt was tried: Clara pried with an umbrella, Milo lifted from below, but the trunk refused to slide free. The violin case had been packed inside it by an old porter years earlier, according to a faded claim tag.
A sharp crack sounded on their third push; the lid flipped open without warning. Something hairy and heavy tumbled across Milo’s wrist. His shoulders jerked back, and Clara’s rolling case tipped over, scattering shirts across the floor. A tarantula the size of a teacup crawled slowly along the trunk edge, its legs tapping like tiny drumsticks. The spider vanished under a shelf, leaving only faint scratches on the dust. After the jolt faded, Milo slipped the slim violin case from the trunk; the wood smelled sweet and dry, untouched by time. Sweat cooled on their necks while they repacked fallen bags around the reopened gap. The closed trunk rested against the wall.
