Warm afternoon light lay across the empty field behind the library. A mild breeze carried an herbal aroma from a small tea cart nearby. Maya knelt beside a bright kite whose tail showed yesterday's grass stains. Leo, who had already untangled the string, straightened and scanned the sky. Beyond a low fence, a landfill rose like a dull hill of bags. Close to the fence, a technician balanced on a ladder, repairing a street lamp. The lamp had quietly needed repair since the early spring months. They have waited through three slow weekends to test the new frame. They had planned to fly the kite until its nose touched the water tower.

The kite lifted quickly once Maya pulled the line and Leo stepped back. A stronger gust dragged the spool, and a knot scraped against broken glass. The frayed section, which had gone unnoticed, stretched like chewing gum. At that moment, a loose calendar page, blown from the landfill, clung to the tail. Extra paper shook the frame sideways, and the kite plunged toward the muddy ditch. Maya dashed to the ladder; her hands showed the thinning string to the technician. Without speaking, he offered narrow tape kept for cable repair. She wrapped the tape around the weak spot, then peeled the calendar page away. A child’s drawing of colorful lanterns covered the paper, still bright under dirt. They trimmed the page into a shorter tail, sending the kite back upward. Wind held steady, and the kite hovered above the tower while both friends stared.
