The Clock Without Time- 適合中高級的英語短篇故事

English 原文
Pale sunlight filtered through a cracked attic window, drawing thin stripes across stacked trunks and sagging beams. Leah knelt beside a tall grandfather clock whose maple surface carried scratches shaped by decades of careless moves. She aimed to restart its silent heart before evening, a modest goal hidden beneath layers of cobwebbed history. First, she tried to judge which tiny key matched the elaborate brass lock shielding the back panel. The keyhole looked oval, yet every key she owned bit the edge and refused to turn.
The lock had been fixed by a previous owner who used glue, so the tumblers held together. Leah fetched a pocket tool she called a troubleshooter, a flat wedge with a folding hook. She slipped the hook behind the panel to guide a thin wire toward the jammed lever. If she had known the screws were stripped, she would have pried at a safer corner. Metal squeaked, wood splintered, and a screw bounced toward a pile of old newspapers. She twisted once more; the panel shifted, then finally swung open on creaking hinges.
The space behind the panel looked hollow; most gears were gone, leaving only a dull spring coiled like a snail. Through the gap, Leah gained a profound insight into neglect: time itself had vanished from the clock. She traced faint outlines where wheels once sat, noticing a darker circle that marked each vanished cog. Her hand reached deeper, yet nothing waited except cold air and crumbs of rust. She wiped her hands on her jeans and leaned the loose panel against the wall. Soft dust rested over the silent pendulum.
