English 原文
Streetlamps along the disused railway cast long amber bands across cracked concrete while wind carried the faint smell of oil. Lewis, the night security officer, moved along his routine patrol and tapped each rail with his boot out of habit. A metallic ticking rose from the old signal house, breaking the steady rhythm of distant traffic on the bypass. He raised an eyebrow, swung his flashlight toward the doorway, and chose to investigate the unexpected sound. The handle resisted; the swollen wooden door refused to shift after years of damp evenings. The lock had been painted over many times, sealing the frame like a careless layer of wax. Lewis fished a small horseshoe magnet from his pocket, slipped it through a gap, and dragged the forgotten iron key closer. The key knocked against the threshold; his palm scooped it up, and the latch finally turned. Wood groaned, and cool air crept out, carrying dust that quivered in the flashlight beam. He stepped inside, let the door settle behind him, and tested the floorboards with a cautious heel.
Darkness folded around the narrow corridor, and the flashlight flickered twice before stabilizing with a pale cone of light. Cobwebs brushed Lewis’s sleeves, powdering the fabric, while loose posters fluttered against chipped tiles like silent moths. The ticking grew clearer, settling somewhere near the base of the signal levers. He crouched beside the machine and pressed the flashlight between his teeth, freeing both hands for another search. Grease, screws, and a bent spring appeared, yet nothing moved in time with the regular beat. If he had brought a stethoscope, he would have traced the sound more quickly, but guessing would suffice. He slid a lever aside; dust poured off, revealing a narrow gap beneath the steel frame. Two bright eyes gleamed within, and a tiny hedgehog shuffled forward, nudging a trapped pocket watch that clicked with each step. The animal paused, nose twitching, then squeezed past his boot and vanished through a broken grate. Lewis lifted the watch; its glass had cracked, and the second hand kept striking a loose screw. He set the dented timepiece on a shelf, closed the lever gap, and allowed silence to return. Outside, rusty rails rested under faint moonlight, and insects drummed against nearby signal wires.
