Leo stood on a wooden platform that crossed the rim of a vast canyon. Warm air rose from the stone below, and a dry smell of sage rubbed against the rail. The boards under his boots had grown pale after many seasons; darker strips, where shoes had never touched, showed the deck’s earlier color. He unpacked a small box of chalk because he wanted to finish one bright sketch of the rock walls before daylight thinned.

A gust rushed along the cliff face, flipping the first sheet in his pad. While he trapped the paper with his elbow, the sun slipped lower, so the light changed from white to a rich orange. His blue chalk snapped, leaving only a short piece. Leo switched to red, which caught the new color faster. He had just leaned forward when the corner of the platform creaked. A tiny slab of wood lifted, and a thin silver coin rolled out. It had been pressed under the plank for years; dust still ringed its edge. The date showed a summer long past, and the worn metal glinted like the sunset touching the majestic layers of stone. Leo set the coin beside his pad, added the final shadow to the distant ridge, and watched pink light settle across the cliffs.
