English 原文
Mira stepped into the old winter garden on the rare public occasion when its cracked glass roof stood uncovered for inspection. Damp air drifted through the arches, carrying the smell of seaweed from the nearby shore. Along the central path, patterned tiles gleamed in patchy sunlight, each square painted like part of a chessboard. A faint clatter echoed above as pigeons shifted on iron rafters. Mira knelt near a loose corner tile, brushing grit away with her sleeve. Beneath the glaze, the outline of a tiny knight appeared—silver paint still bright against faded crimson. The square rocked but stayed in place, so she pressed her fingertips along the edge, searched for a gap, and found none. A second push sent a hairline crack across the surface; the tile tilted, then slipped free, exposing dusty space below.
A dull glass tube lay hidden inside the cavity. Its tip had snapped, and a bead of quicksilver quivered near the break before rolling toward the light. The liquid metal spread in a thin ribbon, catching reflections of iron, stone, and Mira’s moving hands. She lifted the tube, set it aside, and spotted a green gem wedged among splinters of mortar. Light struck its facets, and for a moment the whole floor brightened, as though the jewel borrowed every stray ray. That small revelation—that color could live beneath so much ruin—sent her palm reaching forward. The gem refused to budge; mortar gripped it like a vise. She twisted a metal hairpin under the edge, pried once, twice, until the stone clicked free, but the sudden motion jerked her wrist. The pin slipped, tapping the tile stack, and the loose knight figurine toppled into the spreading quicksilver.
A gust swept through the broken roof; fragments of glass tinkled down the beams. The displaced tile slid sideways under the draft, nudging Mira’s ankle and startling her balance. She clutched the gem, but the slick surface escaped her grasp, bounced against terracotta, and disappeared into a narrower seam beyond reach. Wind eased, leaving only the hollow rattle of leaves against the framework. Mira straightened, dust streaking her cuffs, and glanced once more into the opening. Quicksilver pooled around the lone knight and reflected the dim skylight.
