English 原文
Darius swung the chain-link gate, and a raspy hinge answered the late afternoon breeze. Weed tufts poked through infield clay, yet the wide white plate still caught sunlight the way polished metal does. Along the first-base line, posts stand firm although their paint now flakes in thin curls. Opposite them, a row of benches, set in a shallow curve, once shaped team synergy; players could glance sideways and read each other’s posture without twisting their necks. Even the faded chalk stripes still emphasize effort, running straight from plate to bag as if daring any runner to slow.
He crossed the diamond, shoes crunching on dried earth that remembered rain only through hard cracks. The equipment shed waited behind the dugout. Rust filmed its latch, and the door resisted his first pull. A second tug made the bolt jolt free; metal groaned, and warm dust puffed outward. Inside, shelves sagged under dented helmets and warped bats, but no baseballs showed. He nudged a helmet aside, and a sparrow burst from the darkness. Its wings grazed his shoulder, scattering fluff. A bundle of twigs filled an old catcher’s mitt; three pale eggs gleamed where leather once cupped fast pitches.
Darius steadied his breath, then crouched. A plastic bucket lay overturned beneath the lowest shelf. When he lifted it, a single leather baseball rolled into the muted light, its stitching deeply scuffed, its skin stained by seasons of sliding clay. He tapped it against his palm. The hide felt dry yet stubborn, a small trace of fortitude preserved in cork and thread. He eased the bucket back, sealing quiet around the nest, and backed from the shed without stirring more dust.
The sun inched lower, brushing gold across the grass while distant traffic hummed beyond the fence. Darius paused at home plate, turning the weathered ball until its seams matched the shadows stretching over the field. The scuffed ball rested in his open palm while evening light pooled across the empty diamond.
