The Sprinkler That Stopped the Shot-

English 原文
Ben knelt beside the raised wooden bed while Clara unfolded the silver tripod behind him. Afternoon sun fell across leaves of lettuce and mint, and warm air carried the smell of damp soil. Beneath the lush carpet of spinach, a low mound marked the entrance to a tiny tunnel. The pair had planned the visit carefully; Ben had always wanted a clear photograph of the shy gopher rumored to live there. According to the volunteer gardener, the burrow belonged to a small terrestrial mammal that rarely left its shadowed habitat during daylight. Quiet breaths drifted between them while they waited beneath the bright leaves, the cameras already balanced.
Minutes passed before a whisker showed, but a wheelbarrow clanged near the fence and the whisker vanished. Clara adjusted the zoom ring, yet the lens fogged where her fingers had touched the glass. She wiped it with her sleeve, repositioned the tripod, and pressed the shutter. The camera clicked, yet a red light warned that the memory card was full. If Clara had checked the storage earlier, they would have avoided the delay. While she deleted old files, Ben sprinkled a narrow line of carrot shavings beside the mound. The bright pieces settled on the soil and might hold the animal above ground longer. The entrance tunnel, partly collapsed, had been widened by constant digging, and fresh soil rolled outward with each faint movement below.
A sudden hiss cut through the garden; a hidden sprinkler head rose and burst open, throwing cold arcs across vegetables and equipment. The gopher shot from the tunnel, but instead of stopping at the carrots, it bolted under a stack of clay pots. Ben shielded the lens with his jacket; Clara swung the tripod sideways, snapping frames through the watery blur. When the sprinkler paused, the preview screen revealed the dripping gopher clearly. A second shape waited beside it: a young toad perched calmly on the tripod foot, its throat pulsing. Ben stifled a laugh, lowered the camera, and wiped water from his forehead. Water pooled around the tripod legs and soaked the loose dark soil.
